Sign Generator

Norm and Jürg Lehni

2003

Sign Generator, developed by Norm in collaboration with Jurg Lehni, was born of a critical reflection on the western alphabet. The generator draws straight from one point to another on a grid of 3 points by 3 to make all possible signs offered by the grid. In the finite number of elements generated, we find the letters of the Roman alphabet (a, b, c etc.) and variant forms they may be. This sign generator exists under two forms: software and hardware. We can find the software version at this address:

where everyone can create a library of signs, print and export it. The hardware version is composed of a keyboard connected to a screen that displays the different combinations of signs.
